The game is the same as the game Rock-Paper-Scissors, but with the "scissors" replaced with butter.

The rules are almost exactly the same as Rock-Paper-Scissors.
[edit] Role in the episode
In "Patrick! The Game," Patrick tries to make his own game. After his first idea, Tic Tac, fails, he creates "Rock, Paper, Butter." He shows his idea to Squidward who trashes the idea by saying an awful pun. After that, Patrick gives up on the game.
