Plot

Santa Claus. Mr. Krabs doesn't care if him and Jack Frost are having ice cream cones!

Its Christmas time and Patchy the Pirate is telling the story of how SpongeBob first brought Christmas to Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob is sneaking up to Sandy's tree dome to perform his new karate move, and sees Sandy lighting up her tree to look like a Christmas tree. SpongeBob, mistaking the lights for fire, freaks out and runs in and splashes water on Sandy. An annoyed Sandy realizes that SpongeBob's never seen a Christmas tree. Confused, SpongeBob asks what Christmas is, and Sandy tells SpongeBob about Santa Claus, decorating, giving and receiving presents, and all of that other Christmas etc. SpongeBob hurries to the Krusty Krab afterwards and tells Mr. Krabs, Patrick, and Squidward all about what he's learned. SpongeBob spreads Christmas all over Bikini Bottom, telling how you can write to Santa, and he will give you what you want. Then everyone in Bikini Bottom writes their wish of what they want to Santa, and SpongeBob uses a machine to shoot the letters up to the ocean surface. However, one certain Grinch, Squidward, refuses to take part in this merriment. While everyone decorates and writes letters to Santa, Squidward refuses to believe in Santa and all the Christmas cheer. On Christmas Eve, everyone waits outside singing for Santa, while Squidward goes to sleep. The next morning, Santa never came, and everyone gets mad at SpongeBob for filling their heads with fairy-tales and leaves SpongeBob. SpongeBob, heartbroken, is only made worse when Squidward comes out and makes fun and taunts SpongeBob about Santa. SpongeBob gives Squidward a present that he would've given him so he would not feel left out if Santa came. Squidward unwraps the present to find a carved wooden clarinet, hand-made by SpongeBob. Squidward is touched and feels like a jerk. SpongeBob started to remove the Christmas décor on Squidward's house when he hears, "ho! ho! ho!". Squidward, feeling bad for SpongeBob, appears dressed as Santa Clause. SpongeBob freaks out and gets all excited, Santa tells SpongeBob that he brought Christmas to Bikini Bottom by telling them about it, which makes SpongeBob faint with happiness. Squidward is ready to take the suit off, when all the fish of Bikini Bottom appear, asking for presents. Squidward runs in and out of his house giving all the fish his belongings to make SpongeBob and them happy, and sharing Christmas spirit. When it's all over, Squidward has nothing left and takes off the suit, and SpongeBob appears to him telling him everything he missed, and Squidward pushes SpongeBob away. Squidward asks himself "I just gave away everything I owned. Am I insane?!" That's when Squidward finds a note at his doorstep. It's a note from Santa! The note thanks Squidward for helping him spread joy, and tells him he's been a good boy this year. Squidward then looks up to see the real Santa in his sleigh flying out of Bikini Bottom, laughing with joy. Shocked, Squidward just tells himself that yep, he's insane, and walks back into his empty house playing his wooden clarinet.

Cultural References

Patrick. Tsk tsk tsk, will he ever learn?
  • The picture of Santa SpongeBob shows to Mr. Krabs, Patrick, and Squidward is the official Santa for Coca-Cola.
  • The little girl's wish for front teeth is a reference on Tiny Tim's "All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth".
  • The eggs Patchy was given are the same eggs Yoshi uses in Yoshi's Island.
  • The Santa Claus outfit that Squidward wore is the same thing as the Grinch wore with the no pants part. The other part of the outfit is the long white beard is the exact same as the one Jack Skellington used on his Santa Claus outfit.
  • SpongeBob tells stories of Christmas and Santa Claus, and bringing Christmas to Bikini Bottom, just like Jack Skellington did in The Nightmare Before Christmas.
  • When Sandy was acting out things about Christmas for SpongeBob, one of the things she did looked like the Road Runner from Looney Tunes.

Trivia/Goofs

  • This is the first full length episode of SpongeBob SquarePants.
  • The wishes of some citizens are as follows: SpongeBob wished for Santa to visit Bikini Bottom. Mr. Krabs wished for a pony with saddlebags full of money. Patrick wished for another piece of paper (as he kept on ripping the paper SpongeBob gave him to write his letter). A female fish wished for a new hairstyle. A kid fish wished for front teeth. An elderly fish wished for a glass of water for his teeth.
  • Just like the other holiday specials, this episode only tends to air on TV in the United States and Australia on the holiday the episode takes place in.
  • During the song, when SpongeBob and Patrick decorate Squidward's house, and Squidward says to take it off immediately, SpongeBob's pineapple is not visible, even though it is right next to Squidward's house.
  • During the December 4, 2006 showing of "Christmas Who," the closed caption text reads "Insert Sample Caption Text Here" during the beginning of the show.
  • On the Season Two DVD, Patchy's line at the beginning of Act II, "It's about time you got back! Now I can finish me story," is cut because in the original show, after the commercials have played, he had told that phrase. In the DVD, they cut it off because it was useless to have that there, as there are no commercials on DVD's. It can still be seen on TV.
  • The picture that Squidward takes is mentioned in "The Secret Box".
  • If all episodes were in chronological order, this would be the 25th episode. Christmas is on December 25th.
  • In this episode, Patrick didn't know about Christmas. However, in the Season 1 episode Jellyfishing (Episode), he knew about Christmas when he said, "Merry Christmas!" when Squidward entered his house after riding his bike. It is possible that this is a flashback, as evidenced by Patchy.
  • The picture of SpongeBob Patchy has had SpongeBob facing the outside, but after he is finished decorating his house, he is facing to the right instead of the other way.
  • This is the first time Squidward received a clarinet for a present. The second time was in Giant Squidward.
  • The old man said that he would like a glass of water for his teeth. But, he is already underwater.
  • Squidward says in the Very First Christmas To Me song "SpongeBob, take this stuff down immediately." The "stuff" he is referring to is the decorations on his house. For some reason, later, the decorations can still be seen on his house.
  • After this episode, Squidward misses 6 episodes: Survival of the Idiots, Dumped, No Free Rides, I'm Your Biggest Fanatic, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III and Squirrel Jokes.
  • This is the third Holiday-themed SpongeBob episode. First Holiday-themed episode: Scaredy Pants. Second Holiday-themed episode: Valentine's Day.
