Plot
It is closing time at the Krusty Krab and Squidward is getting ready to go home. But then, Tom comes to the door and makes an order. Squidward says "I can't hang out here all night, I've got a life!" But then Tom says "Well, fine! If you do not want my money!" Mr. Krabs realizes that more profit would be gained if it was open 24 hours a day, so he does that. SpongeBob is really excited, while Squidward is extremely annoyed. A bit later, the Krusty Krab is completely empty. Squidward decides to scare SpongeBob with tales of the Hash-Slinging Slasher. SpongeBob is scared of the story, and screams repeatedly, while Squidward laughs. Squidward is annoyed because of SpongeBob's screaming. He tells him to stop screaming and says that he was joking. SpongeBob says "Oh...", and then starts laughing hysterically.Later that night, every customer is long gone. It is a dark night, with strange moaning noises that can be heard in the empty, ghostly streets. Squidward is reading a book when all of a sudden he hears a suction-cup like sound out of nowhere with a slippery-like noise, and it stops leaving Squidward to not care about. Then the sound goes off again, and Squidward begins to get scared, and the sound stops again and Squidward goes back to reading. Suddenly he hears the sound again and is really afraid. But it was only SpongeBob walking on the ceiling. SpongeBob then looks down behind Squidward, and startles him. Now, everything that Squidward said that would happen earlier in the story actually happen. The lights flicker and the phone rings. Then a bus comes, and he and SpongeBob are suspicious (seeing as the buses do not run that late), then comes out the Hash-Slinging Slasher. As soon as they see him they panic, but SpongeBob only does after a minute or so because he believes it is actually Squidward playing as the ghost, to whom Squidward denies it and proves he is not, SpongeBob realizes it is really the Hash-Slinging Slasher. He and SpongeBob are really scared, until they find out that the so-called "Hash-Slinging Slasher" is actually a person who wants a job application, and hung up on the phone because he was nervous.
Trivia/Goofs
- If the only two employees are Squidward and SpongeBob, then how does the teenager get a job application?
- The episode's title references to the night shift.
- The deleted scene in this episode was when SpongeBob does another thing with the "at night" joke. This time he rips a section of the Floorboard out ,and delivers the mail to Floorboard Harry.
- Squidward begins to count the signal that means the ghost will appear. "First the lights, then the phone.", and a green stuff appears in the wall. Squidward says "No, this shouldn't be happening", and the bus appears at the front of the Krusty Krab. SpongeBob says, "I didn't know the bus comes here at this hour", the green stuff on the wall had disappeared.
- When SpongeBob realizes that is the ghost, not Squidward, his hat falls off because he screams. In one of the next shots, when he is hugging Squidward, his hat is there again.
- Although Squidward says the walls always ooze green slime, it is the only time it happened.
