SpongeBob's morning has seemed to go well, until after he hugs Gary so hard that his shell crackles off him. SpongeBob tries to go through his normal routine, but he unintentionally annoys his best friends, who call him "Idiot Boy". He accidentally ruins a birthday cake for Patrick's mom and spills water over Sandy's new invention, disturbs Squidward's good sleep, and slips up at work, getting Mr. Krabs and his money fried. SpongeBob returns home, only to have Gary still mad at him for breaking his shell. So, with everyone mad at him, SpongeBob decides to leave Bikini Bottom forever. As he is leaving, he falls on a cliff and hits his head that knocks him unconcoius.

Back in Bikini Bottom, Patrick and Sandy find a note explaining SpongeBob's absence. Patrick, Sandy, and Mr. Krabs feel bad about how they treated SpongeBob and set out to find him. Squidward is very glad to be rid of SpongeBob, but he reluctantly tags along with Patrick, Sandy, and Mr. Krabs to get a pretty egg.

Spongebob wakes up with the loss of his memory.

When they find SpongeBob, they try to convince him to come back home with him, but SpongeBob doesn't remember them at all. Patrick, Sandy, and Mr. Krabs take him back to Bikini Bottom anyway, thinking that he will remember soon. They all arrive at the Krusty Krab, and Squidward gets the egg he wanted. SpongeBob is about to return to New Kelp City twice, but he gets hit on the head with Squidward's egg. Now, he gets his memory back. SpongeBob still wants to return to New Kelp City, but after hearing the news, he chooses to stay in Bikini Bottom with his friends. Disappointed that SpongeBob is staying forever, Squidward throws his brain in the garbage can.

When Sandy clenched her teeth in anger, there was a sound effect of a machine gun reloading.
The German name for the episode is, "WasBob WoKopf? - SpongeBob verzweifelt gesucht", which means, "WhatBob WhereHead? - SpongeBob in Search".

SpongeBob in the Streets of New Kelp City

WhoBob WhatPants? was viewed by 7.7 million viewers. This ranked the program the number one most viewed entertainment show of the night, and the number two most viewed show in all categories after ESPN Monday Night Football. Despite the high ratings, the episode was reviewed negatively by critics. A ToonZone reviewer said that the episode has one event after another, none of which are that funny. Paul Mavis of DVDTalk.com said that the DVD is a disappointment, with the episode not funny enough to deserve its own release, and the remaining episodes are nothing special either. The quality of the video and the DVD however was reviewed well.
